Kalutara Temple, Galle

The Kalutara Temple, Galle is one of the popular Galle Tourist Attractions. It is favored by tourists from all across the world owing to its historical significance which dates back to the 11th century. The plot of land where the Kalutara Temple, Galle is presently situated is home to a fort in the Kalu Ganga islet. The Kalutara Temple Complex thus is a vast enclave accommodating a fort that interests guests from all over the world. The Galle Kalutara Temple is located to the south west of the country, and accessibility to the Kalutara Temple is not much of a problem.

The Kalutara Temple, Galle is positioned on the south bank of the Kalu Ganga River. In the past, this piece of land was the home of the Gangatilake Viharaya, which hosts a broad highway and infinite rows of brightly lit shops. It must be mentioned that the town of Kalutara was the seat of government of a South Indian Prince called Vickramapandya in the 11th century. When the Portuguese arrived here, they realized the strategic importance of the city. They demolished the structure of the Kalutara Temple and erected a fort instead so as to guard the coast and acquire access to the landmass.

The fort within the Kalutara Temple, Galle was rebuilt and expanded. In 1815, during the fall of Kandy, it was subsequently occupied by the British. In recent times, the government of Sri Lanka has utilized the complex of the Kalutara Temple to build a residence for the Government Agent. The construction of the railway line had subjected the rebuilt temple to the threat of destruction. The new rail bridge of 1910 was planned in a way that sent the link straight into the temple property. The path was diverted further west to avoid demolition of the temple and the Bo Tree. The premises have been taken over by the Kalutara Bodhi Trust in the 1960s.
