The Peace Pagoda in Galle was constructed by the Nipponzan-Myohoji Buddhist Order. After his meeting with Mahatma Gandhi, Nichidatsu Fujii was so impressed that he decided to spend his life to promote non-violence. The Galle Peace Pagoda is a serene structure radiating tranquility. Surrounding it you will find pristine stretches of vegetation, spreading on all sides.
As is the characteristic feature of all stupas, the Peace Pagoda, Galle has a dome shaped structure set atop a semi cylindrical flat base. There are stairs leading from one level to another, though the levels are only a few meters apart. On each of the levels you can go round the whole circumference of the structure. On the topmost level that can be reached, above which the high dome starts, there is a medium sized cavity housing a deity of Lord Buddha. This golden statue shows Buddha sitting on a lotus, with inscriptions on the background.
The Peace Pagoda, Galle has been a center for various peace gatherings. On 26 December, 2006, a year after the massive tsunami that left millions dead and missing, a peace gathering was held in front of this structure. Drums were beaten as monks chanted prayers until the exact moment when the first wave had struck. A brief silence followed to mourn those lost on this day.
