The colonial power ruined the peasantry and the local handicrafts. However the struggle for independence in Sri Lanka did not star before 1935. The history of Sri Lanka records a long drawn battle for independence till 1970. However during the Second World War the British used this island as their base against the Japanese. Colombo was badly affected by the Japanese attack. By 1972 Sri Lanka had received complete independence from the British and its name was officially changed from Ceylon to Sri Lanka.
