The Selva Sannithi Temple, Jaffna is situated in the coastal village of Thondaimanaru. The Selva Sannithi Temple, Jaffna serves as the abode of Lord Murugan. The village is nestled in Vadamarachi district in Sri Lanka towards the northern tip of the spectacular Jaffna Peninsula. The village being located at the edge of the sea, proved beneficial for merchants and travelers. The Valli river flows past the village. This river was developed into a seaport for Nagaddpam, an ancient city in Jaffna, taking advantage of the strategic location of the village by Emperor Mamallan. The village is landscaped by mountains, desert land, coastlines and fertile plains. Historical events as old as 2 century AD took place in this village.

There is an interesting story behind the building of the Selva Sannithi Temple in Jaffna. According to mythology Lord Murugan , the god worshiped by Tamils, wanted his temple to be built on a piece of land that was characterized by five different forms of the Tamilian language. Since Thondaimanaru was landscaped by 5 geographical features the people of the village believed that land and language went parallely which led Lord Murugan to choose Thondaimanaru as the sacred site to build the temple.
