The Degaldoruva Raja Maha Vihara, Kandy is one of the most popular Kandy Tourist Destinations. Located at the heart of Sri Lanka, the scenic city of Kandy is considered as the cultural capital of the country. The Degaldoruva Raja Maha Vihara, Kandy is a famous temple in Kandy where you can witness some exquisite paintings.

The Degaldoruva Raja Maha Vihara, Kandy is situated only a few miles away from Kandy and very near to Kundasale. The place is renowned for housing Kandyan style of paintings. These paintings were created during the rule of the Kandyan King, Kirti Sri Rajasinghe. The King donated lands and other valuables to the Degaldoruva Raja Maha Vihara in Kandy. In fact, every temple that received the king's benevolence was called Raja Maha Vihara. Even today these temples are known by this name.

The Degaldoruva paintings were completed during the time of King Rajadhi Rajasinghe, the younger brother of King Kirti Sri Rajasinghe, after the death of the latter. Once the paintings were completed, King Rajadhi Rajasinghe handed them over to a very learned monk named Moratota Dhammarakhkhita Nayaka Thera.

The paintings at the Degaldoruva Raja Maha Vihara, Kandy were made by four 'Sittara' painters, led by Devendra Mulachari. The traditional customs, manners and social conditions of the time are well represented by these attractive paintings. At the image house in the temple - 'budu-ge' - you can see portraits of the four Jataka tales as continuous stories.

All paintings at the Degaldoruva Raja Maha Vihara, Kandy are of uniform size. The colors used notably are red and green, made from the bark of trees. Significantly, only front view or the side view of human figures are depicted in the paintings. Trees are portrayed with branches and leaves spread on either side. Some fish swimming and a few floral decorations represent a stream.
