Dodanwala Devalaya, Kandy

Dodanwala Devalaya, Kandy is also known as the Suriyagoda viharaya. It was built in 15th century A.D. However the building underwent several renovations and the structure that stands today dates back to the 18th century AD. Locals now prefer to call it the Tempita viharaya. This is because the Dodanwala Devalaya, Kandy is actually an image house built on stone pillars. The whole structure comprises of wooden beams that support the walls and the floor of the shrine.

The Dodanwala Devalaya, Kandy is also a museum of sorts for here the tourists will find several unique paintings and statues that originally belong to the 18th century. Most of these artifacts are priceless. The temple is actually surrounded by a beautiful lush green garden from where it derives its original name, Suriyagoda viharaya.

Dodanwela devale or the central temple of the Dodanwala Devalaya, Kandy is situated amongst centuries old Na trees (Mesua nagassarum) or ironwood trees. Like many of the other temples in Kandy this temple also has a rather serene and calm atmosphere. The shrine has a historical significance apart from its architectural brilliance. King Rajasingha II, it is said, offered his crown to the Portuguese after his victory at the Dodanwala Devalaya in Kandy. For its dual importance - historical and cultural - this shrine is considered to be one of the important tourist destinations in Kandy.

In its earlier days the temple was dedicated to the local deity but later during the 18th century the temple was reconstructed and the Hindu god was enshrined here. Tourists will require almost half a day to explore the 'devale' in its totality and scrutinize the architectural details.
