Prior to the arrival of the British colonizers in the country, Sri Lanka has more than 30000 elephants. A census in 1960's revealed that the elephants are on the verge on extinction.

It was at this grave juncture that the government decided to put up The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, Kandy. The sole aim of the organization was to save elephants from extinction. Today, the number of elephants in Sri Lanka has increased to 3000. Located at a distance of 80 kilometers northeast of Colombo, The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, Kandy is regarded as the home to the biggest herd of captive elephants in the world. You can see them in queue, moving towards the river for a bath.

You can touch the elephants for a few Sri Lankan rupees. The elephants in the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, Kandy are completely dependant on their human nurturer. You can take a photograph of the suckling elephant for money. Around 110 people are appointed in the sanctuary to take care of the elephants. The orphanage needs around 14000 kilograms of foodstuff every day. The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, Kandy is funded both by the Government and the willing tourists.
