The Royal Botanical Garden, Kandy is home to approximately 4000 species. Established in 1372 AD, this famous garden of Kandy records a footfall of 1.2 million every year. The Royal Botanical garden is set beside a tranquil lake. You will find a number of swans and ducks swimming in the azure lake. Right in the middle of the lake, you will find an island with the large tree known as the papyrus of the Nile. The bamboo collection to the right of the lake at the Royal Botanical Garden, Kandy will surely amaze you. The giant bamboo from Burma is the tallest bamboo in the world.

The stem of the bamboo are 30 to 40 meters in height and the diameter measures up to 25-30 meters. The average growth rate of every new shoot of the bamboo is about 30cm a day. The other kinds of bamboo at the Royal Botanical Garden, Kandy are the Yellow Building bamboo, Dwarf Chinese bamboo, Feather-leaved bamboo and Prickly bamboo. The palm avenue at the garden comprise the graceful Cabbage Palm avenue, Palmyrah Avenue and the Royal Palm Avenue. The palms at the Cabbage Palm Avenue are about 21 meters tall. The center of the giant lawn is occupied by the Java willow or Java fig tree.
