Sightseeing in Matara

Sightseeing in Matara is an important aspect of the city. It is the most important city of Sri Lanka. Located about 160 kilometers from Sri Lanka Matara is the chief terminus of the coastal rail line. Matara was once under the reign of the Dutch and Portuguese people. This fact is vouched by the several monuments spread across the city which bears evidences of Dutch and Portuguese architecture. Sightseeing in Matara is very popular with the travelers because of its sweet-scented spice plantations, sparkling beaches, luscious tea estates and acres of green paddy fields.

Matara Sightseeing especially includes five important sites. Special mention has to be made of the Matara Fort which was built by the Dutch in 1640. The fort was actually a Portuguese garrison. The fort has the old Dutch church which is known as one of the oldest buildings of the city. The fort is full of several other monuments which were built in the Dutch and British era but have undergone many changes in the coming years. The best aspect of the fort is its star shape which was done to provide extra protection to the main fort which is located across the river. Travelers flock to this fort in order to marvel at the exquisite architecture of the monument. Matara Tours seems in complete without visiting this fort.

Another important landmark without which Sightseeing in Matara seems unfinished is the Mulgirigala Rock temple. Located 16 kilometers from Tangalla, this cave temple is carved out of a monolithic rock and has several statues of Lord Buddha in various postures. The statuette of reclining Buddha in smiling repose is the best of all. The Buddhist shrine over the rock and the excellent wall paintings are not to be missed.

Also visit the beautiful beach resort of Weligama which is just 15 kilometers from the city of Matara. Tangalla is another important part of sightseeing in Matara. The sandy coves and the stretch of white sand known as the Medaketiya are the places to see at tangalla. The last but one of the best attractions of Matara is the place called Dondra or Devinuawara. Dondra is actually the southern tip of Sri Lanka and attracts visitors for its Hindu shrine of God Vishnu. The temple holds an annual fair in the month of July/August when thousands of travelers visit this place.
