Adams Peak Sri Lanka

A must visit sightseeing attraction of Sri Lanka is the Adams Peak Sri Lanka. Rising at the height of 2243 meters the Adams Peak Sri Lanka, thrusts itself towards the sky by tearing the lush green vegetation in southwestern Sri Lanka. The Adams Peak of Sri Lanka is a sacred place for all the four religions of the world. It is visited by Buddhist, Hindus, Christians and Muslim pilgrims. This peak was however, worshipped for a long time even before these religions flourished in Sri Lanka. The local inhabitants regarded this site to be sacred and therefore worshipped it.

These local inhabitants of Sri Lanka named the Adams Peak Sri Lanka as the Samanala Kanda. The name came from the Saman who was one of the four deities of Sri Lanka. But the Hindus believe this mountain peak which is also known by the name Sri Pada, as the footprint of Shiva after his dance. However, the Buddhist traditions have something else to say. According to them, this is the footprint of Buddha which was actually left on a huge sapphire on his last visit to Sri Lanka.

When the Portuguese Christians came to Sri Lanka for the first time they said that the Adams Peak is nothing but the footprint of St Thomas who brought Christianity to Sri Lanka. Finally the Arabs believed it to be the footprint of Adam who when expelled from heaven was put on this peak by God. For years the Adams Peak Sri Lanka was visited by lots of travelers including famous names like Ibn Batutah and Marco Polo.

Nowadays pilgrimage session to the Adams Peak Sri Lanka begins from the month of December and continues till April after which the monsoon begins. During the months of October and November the area is obscured by clouds. Above the peak there is a platform which is oblong in shape and here you would find a small Buddhist temple and the shrine of Saman with the strange footprint.

Various offerings are made here for recovering from sickness. These offerings often include coil or silver which is as long as the donor’s height. The rainwater collected from the footprints is thought to have excellent healing powers. Another surprising event connected with Adams Peak Sri Lanka is that you would find myriads of small butterflies come to die at this sacred mountain.
