Bogoda Temple

On your trip to Sri Lanka you would find varieties of sightseeing attractions in Sri Lanka. These places of interest include temples and other religious sites as well as various parks and sanctuaries. The Bogoda Temple is an important site in Sri Lanka. You should never miss the beautiful Bogoda Temple which is an important landmark of Sri Lanka.

On your tour to Sri Lanka you would find that the Bogoda Temple is an attraction that no one should miss. This rock cut temple which lies on a side of the famous Bogoda Bridge that is made of wood was constructed by Walagamba. This king who was at that time running for his life from the Indian invaders took refuge at this place for almost two and half years. This temple later on came to be known as Bogoda Raja Maha Vihare.

Step inside this tiny Bogoda Temple in Sri Lanka and you would find two statues of Buddha. One statue is in standing posture while the other one is in samadhi. The statue of reclining Buddha has a Makara thorana over it. This Makara thorana is unique because here the face of the creature is not depicted sideways but directly above the statue. The entrance doors of the temple have beautiful arches and are heavily ornamented. Look at the back of these statues and you would find another statue which is of Lord Vishnu. It is said that this Vishnu statue existed here long before the temple was even constructued. This statue is covered with a wall which was later used to divide the temple into two chambers. However the Makara thorana and another statue of Reverend Muppane Dhammananda were destroyed during vandalism in the year 1993.

The priests dwelling place in the Bogoda Temple is now in a shattered state but from the meda midula and pillared verandahs you can easily imagine what it was like in the earlier times. This building was build during the Kandyan era while the temple dates back from the Anuradhapura era. In the Bogoda Temple you would find a Brahmanic inscription which says that the cave which is behind the temple was donated to a Brahmin named Brahmadutta by the provincial ruler Tissa. This cave where you can reach through a tunnel is now a days inaccessible because of its darkness and since it is infested with bats.
However it is said that this tunnel leads to the nearby tea estate of Tudumale.
