Buduruwagala

If you want to see various statues of Buddha then you must visit Buduruwagala. Buduruwagala has various sculptures of Buddha and thus it is a must visit spot for those on pilgrim tours to Sri Lanka. On your sightseeing tour to Sri Lanka you would find the Buduruwagala to be located 5 km from the Wellawaya on the Thanamalwila Road. The meaning of the word Buduruwagala is ‘the rock with the statue of Buddha’. Here you would find seven figures carved out of rock. The most famous one is the huge 51 foot Buddha statue which is made in Avaya Mudra posture at the center. You can still see the streaks of orange color giving the evidence that it was once brightly painted. All these statues reflect Mahayana school of thought and dates back to 10th century AD during the end of the Anuradhapura reign.

There is another unique thing in Buduruwagala in Sri Lanka. It is the shape of the rock itself on which you would find the sculptures. The rock is in the shape of a kneeling elephant with its head down. This 51 feet tall Buduruwagala Buddha statue is regarded now as the tallest one in the world after the Bamian Buddha statue. On both sides of this statue you would find two statues which are each 40 feet high. Again on the sides of these two statues you would find the statue of a male and a female.

The centre figure on the left is that of Avaloktheeshvara Bodhisattva. On the crown that he wears you would find the small image of meditating Buddha. You must appreciate the sculptor since you can clearly see the image in the crown of the sculpted figure. The female figure is identified with Thara Devi and this statue is sculpted in thivanga position and the other male figure is known as their son Prince Sudana.

On the right side you would find similar three statues. The central one is that of Maithri Bodhishattva. The left one is that of Vajrapani Bodhishattva. All these images have the symbol of lamp flame near their right foot.
