Muthiyangana

Those who are going for pilgrimage tours to Sri Lanka for them one site is a must visit attraction of Sri Lanka and that is Muthiyangana. Muthiyangana is the main temple in the hill town of Badulla. You would find it located on the south of the town beside another clock tower on the Railway Station Road. It is said that the temple dates back to about 2000 years ago. The area of the temple is ideal as a religious site since it is a quiet area with flowering trees and overlooked by a mountain.

Muthiyangana is one of the sixteen most famous religious places for the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. This shrine was built in 4 century AD and here you would find the jaw-bone of Lord Buddha. In fact it is said that the Lord Buddha came to bless this site along with his 500 disciple monks in one of the three trips that he made to Sri Lanka. King Devanampiya Tissa is associated with Muthiyangana. He erected the Muthiyangana of Sri Lanka and enshrined the jaw bone of Buddha. The worst event that the Muthiyangana witnessed was in the year 1627 when the Portuguese attacked Badulla and burnt the town while they had their camp in the Muthiyangana temple.

On Muthiyangana in Sri Lanka you would find painting of Buddha’s visit to this place with the monks in the wall of this temple of Sri Lanka. There are other paintings on various incidents of Buddha’s life on the walls of the main temple too. Within the complex of Muthiyangana you would find other smaller shrines, a hall and a dagoba too under the shades of three Bo Trees.

Along with the Muthiyangana you would also find a small museum attached. This museum has wonderful collection of various artifacts of the temple and flags of the provinces of Sri Lanka. Whenever any tourist comes to this area it becomes a must visit place for that person. This place is open from 9 am to 5 pm every day except Wednesday and Thursday.
