Anuradhapura is one of the popular tourist destinations in Srilanka which attracts a lot of international travelers worldwide all round the year. It was built in the forth century B.C. and is situated some 205 kilometers from Colombo. According to the Sinhala Buddhist records Anuradhapura was a well planned city. There were separate grounds for hunting. There were numerous accommodation facilities and the community was divided into classes. The reservoirs corroborate the fact that there were plenty of water supplies in the town.

Anuradhapura in Srilanka was the ancient capital of Srilanka and was one of the most flourishing cities in that era. Several archeological explorations were carried out which reveals the fact that there was human civilization in the area as early as 500 B.C. This ancient city remained the capital of Srilanka until 10th century A.D. If you look back at the glorified past you will see that this city was the greatest city in Srilanka.

There are quite a number of historical sites in Anuradhapura which make it one of the popular tourist destinations and attract innumerable tourists worldwide every year. The most reputed ones are mentioned below-

Abhayagiri Dagoba- It is one of the famous attractions in Anuradhapura and was founded in 880 B.C. This monumental structure is 50 feet high and could accommodate upto 40,000 people. These buildings were round shaped with a conical top. The Dagobas were used to store the ashes of the monks after they were cremated.

Samadhi Buddha- This is a limestone statute of Buddha will be the first thing which you will notice once you enter the Abhayagiri complex. The statute depicts Buddha in deep meditation. It is infact one of the major attractions in the complex.

Ruanweli Seya- This white dagoba was constructed in the 2nd century B.C by Emperor Dutugamunu. It is one of the greatest dagobas at Anuradhapura and is a sacred place to the Srilankan Buddhists.

Anuradhapura is one of the most significant sightseeing places in Srilanka which attracts a lot of tourists worldwide every year.
