Dambulla




Dambulla is located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is situated some148 km to the north-east of Colombo and 72 km north of Kandy. In the year 1991 this city was declared as a heritage site by the UNESCO. Dambulla is known for its diverse landscapes and has nearly 80 caves in and around the place. The major attractions include several paintings and other historical artifacts. Dambulla was originally founded by king Valagamba in the 1sy century BC. Dambulla is a cradle of ancient civilization and serves as a major historical site.

Dambulla is well connected by various modes of transportation. If you travel by bus you will take some four hours to reach your desired location. The state corporation and the local bus syndicates operate busses to Dambulla in Srilanka.

There are quite a number of local attractions in Dambulla which include the cave temple, the Ranigiri Dambulla international cricket stadium and vast stretches of Iron wood forest.

Dambulla cave temple is the most prominent cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. There are more than 80 caves in the surrounding area. If you ever visit this place you will get to see the intricate architectural work which includes various paintings and statues of Buddha. There are numerous paintings in the wall which depicts Buddha's first sermon and Buddha's temptation by demon Mara.

The Iron Wood Forest and Rose Quartz Mountain are prominent sightseeing places in Dambulla and was known as a human refuge built under the regime of King Dappula in the 10th century AD. The site has vast stretches of greenery and consists of varied species of plants. This place has a historic significance and dates back to 500 million years. If you visit the Rose Quartz Mountain you will find rare white rose and violet quartz deposits.

The international cricket stadium is situated in the north central province of Srilanka and makes arrangement for 30,000 spectators. Very recently this stadium underwent a lot of renovation work when flood lights were installed in the year 2003.

Dambulla is infact one of the major tourist destinations in Srilanka which has become increasingly popular among the international travelers.
