Horton Plains National Park

Horton Plains National Park is a national park in the highlands of Sri Lanka. Horton Plains National Park lies at a height of more than 2000 meters in the central highlands, and its altitude means that it has a much cooler and windier climate than the lowlands of Sri Lanka, with a mean annual temperature of 16 degree C rather than the 26 degree C of the coasts. The plains also characterize many interesting attractions such as Bakers Falls, Chimmini Pool and the famous World's End where the guests can spend a wonderful time.

Horton Plains National Park is certainly one of the world's finest nature assets and eco tourism locations. It is characterized by a beautiful background of rolling hills that are covered in upper montane forest and wet patana grassland. The forests are seen on the hilltops or upper slopes the grasslands in the valleys and lower slopes ultimately giving a passing way to wetland habitats. Horton Plains National Park extents about 10,000 hectares and it are also the home to a broad variety of flora.

The national park also includes 57 species, 29 endemic to Sri Lanka and 24 species of mammal such as elk, deer, giant squirrel, wild boar, wild hare, porcupine and leopard. The bird enthusiasts will be happy to know that there are 87 species of birds, 14 of which are endemic and it also includes many migratory birds.

The visitors to the Horton Plains National Park can follow a 10km loop that add in all of the stunning features, enabling the visitors to enjoy them while holding to the strict rules for environment safety and nature protection.

The best time to visit the Horton Plains National Park is early in the morning as this is when the air is likely to be clearest so that the guests can enjoy the best of the views. In the afternoons, clouds tend to go down and the region becomes submerged in fog. This is equally absorbing though and provides proof for the evolution of this forest type.
