The park was honored as a National park in 1984. Infact it is hailed as one and only national park in the whole of the Central Province in Sri Lanka. The park covers an area of 36, 948 hectares. The Wasgamuwa National Park is tucked on the banks of the Mahaweli the Amban rivers. It is bordered by the Mahaweli river towards the east. While it is bordered by the Amban river towards the west.
