Sudan is the largest country in Africa. It is almost the size of continental USA in the east of the Mississippi River. With a geographical area of 2.5 million square kilometers, Sudan is the 10th largest country in the world.
The country shares its borders with Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, and Uganda. Khartoum is the capital of the country. It has a population of 1.4 million. Omdurman with a population of 2.1 million is another important city in the country.Sudan mostly has a flat terrain with mountains in east and west of the country. Khartoum the capital of the nation is situated at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers. The southern regions are inundated during the annual floods of the Nile River system The country enjoys a desert and savanna type of climate in the north and central regions and tropical climate in the south.
The country has an estimated population of about 40.2 million. Of the total population, 30% to 33% reside in the urban areas. The northern part of the country comprise mostly of Muslims, whereas the South is largely Christian dominated. Islam is the official religion of the country. Arabic is the official language of the country. English and tribal languages are also spoken though sparsely.
Sudan has a literacy rate of approximately 61%. Education is compulsory up to the age of 8 years. Infant mortality rate is 64 out of every 1,000. Life expectancy in the country is 58.5 years. About 80% of the populace depends on agriculture whereas 7% depend on industry and commerce. 13 % of the population is government employees.
The major natural resources of the country are reserves of oil, natural gas, gold, iron ore, copper and other industrial metals. Major agriculture products include cotton, peanuts, sorghum, sesame seeds, gum Arabic, sugarcane, millet, and livestock. Motor vehicle assembly, cement, cotton, edible oils and sugar refining are the main industries.
Sudan’s transportation consists of 4,800 kilometers of single-track railroad with a feeder line. This is supplemented by waterways mode of transport. About 1,900 kilometers or 1,200 miles of paved and gravel road link various parts of the country. Sudan Airways provides a well developed mode of air transport within and beyond its borders. The country also has a 100, 000 member of army. The army is supplemented with a small air and naval wing.
