This large town is located in the Darfur region of northwestern Sudan, at a distance of approximately 120 miles (195 km) to the northeast of Nyala. The town of Al Fasher is connected to the nearby towns of Al-Junaynah and Umm Kaddadah by roadways. In the later part of 18th century, Sultan Abd al-Rahman al-Rashed of the Fur Sultanate of Darfur established his capital city at Al-Fasher, which consequently led to the rapid development of this town around the sultan's palace grounds.

The collection at this museum includes pieces of furniture, large war drums made of copper and various weapons as well. This museum has been named after Ali Dinar, who was one of the most famous personalities in Sudanese history. Ali Dinar was a ruler of the Sultanate Fur dynasty who reigned over Darfur in the year 1916.

Ali Dinar was becoming more and more annoyed at the British-led Sudanese Government due to their inability to control the rebellious tribes that were active in the bordering regions. The British also failed to prove of any assistance in Darfur's border dispute with the French colonial authorities in Chad. This propelled Ali Dinar to threaten the invasion of Anglo-Egyptian territory.
