Dongola

Dongola is one of the favorite tourist destinations in Sudan owing to its ideal location along the River Nile. The travelers coming to the country of Sudan from far and wide prefer to visit Dongola, the capital city of the state of Northern which has made it one of the most sought-after Sudan tourist destinations. You must not confuse it with the old Dongola situated on the opposite bank around 80 kilometers upstream. The culture in Dongola is not typically Sudanese but acts as a melting pot of various cultures. If you are planning for a trip to the country of Sudan then make it a point to visit Dongola, which has become an important archaeological and historical site.

If you trace back the history of Dongola, you will find that it was also a province of the Upper Nubia spreading over both sides of the banks of River Nile. The fact that it also acted as the centre of Nubian civilizations can be inferred from the remains of the Nubian civilizations which have been unearthed from the Makurian period, the Orthodox period and the Islamic period. The whole province of Dongola was a part of the kingdom of Makuria and later on went to become a part of the country of Egypt. It became a part of Egypt after Muhammad Ali Pasha ordered his army to invade and occupy Sudan in the year 1820. After this occupation in the 19th century, it was declared as the seat of power of Pasha. Those who have keen interest in history will find Dongola to be an important site as it is here that you will find the remnants of the Baqt Treaty.

Owing to its significant characteristic features, Dongola has become one of the most liked Sudan tourist destinations. Dongola is also the site of the victory of General Herbert Kitchener, who won over the Mahdist tribes in the year 1896. It is interesting to note that the Dongola Road which is an important feature of the city of Bristol, has been named after this great event. This was also the case of the Dongola Road in Tottenham situated in the North London. This road runs next to Kitchener Road
