Shopping in Falun

Shopping in Falun is one of the favorite activities of the tourists coming to this small but lovely town of Sweden. Though it does not have very glitzy shopping mall yet the there are some interesting shopping options in the downtown area. The best shopping in the downtown can mainly be done along the Slaggatan/Holmgatan and Åsgatan streets. So if you are tired of sightseeing and are thinking of things to do in Falun then here’s your chance to go out and shop till you drop.

The town has a pleasant mix of old and new and inspirational shopping with distinctive boutiques, big chain stores and arcades. Once you go out shopping in Falun, it’s easy to see why Falun is known as ‘Dalarna’s downtown’. There is every opportunity to come home with some great finds. If you happen to visit Falun at the end of the summer then don’t miss the Farmers’ Market, with locally grown vegetables and homemade delicacies. The Dalarna’s designer street in Slaggatan is another hot place to shop for some goodies.

If the local handicrafts of the town interest you then look for them in the Dalarnas Hemslöjd store. This store is situated by the main cobblestone square of Stora Torget. The tourists must know that the price tags attached to these handicrafts may be quite heavy. There's also handicraft and souvenirs available at the mine. You can carry some back home as gifts for your loved ones.

The most common souvenir from Falun and the Dalarna province is the Dala Horse, which is a popular symbol of Sweden. This small wooden horse has been carved since the 17th century. The horse is usually orange or blue and decorated with kurbits painting. It is a symmetrical type of decoration. If you want a genuine one, then you may have to pay at least SEK 100 for the smallest kind. If the Dala Horse feels too main stream and you want a symbol of the town of Falun then you can buy the Falu Maiden. Look for the dress and the hat. This lady is far from the fame of the Dala Horse and is not as easy to find in the shops.
