Sweden can be divided into three main regions:
- Norrland: This part covers about three fifth’s of the country which is very mountainous and has sufficient ore deposits and is densely forested and also it is the part where the maximum number of lakes can be found.
- Svealand: This part of Sweden mainly comprises the Central Swedish Lowland with vast lakes and the hilly forested inland regions.
- Gotaland: This is the southern part of Sweden and mainly comprises the stony highlands of Smaland and the rich plains of Skane.
However it is to be noted that 15% of Sweden lies north of the Arctic circle while the southern part is predominantly agricultural in nature with the forested area spreading into the northern region. The highest population density lies in the Oresund region in south Sweden and in the valley of the lake Malaren located in the central part of Sweden. The largest lakes of Sweden are the Vannern and Vattern while Gotland and Oland are the largest islands of the country.
