In the year 1648 the peace of Westphalia occurred. Sweden was successful in ruling Ingara. In the year 1700, the combined forces of Russia, Norway and Denmark attacked Sweden. Although the Swedish king Charles XII won spectacular victories in the earlier stages, his overambitious plan of capturing Moscow and forcing Russia into peace proved to be a big failure and he himself died in the year 1718 during the siege of the Fredrikstein fortress. In the subsequent wars and peace treaties that followed, the allied forces were joined by Prussia and England and thus the dominance of Sweden as a great power ended during this era.
