Air Force Museum



Those who like to fly high must visit the Air Force Museum,Linköping. The museum located at Malmen, at the outskirt of the city of Linköping. The air force museum is one of the most interesting Tourist Attractions in Linköping which is unlike other museums or tourists sites in the city. The Swedish Air Force Museum is also known as Flygvapenmuseum Malmen,Linköping in the local language. The reason behind choosing Malmen as the venue of Air Force Museum,Linköping is that Malmen is where Baron Carl Cederström, founded his flying school in 1912. Because of his flair for flying he was popularly called as "Flyer Baron".

The flying school combined with the Swedish Army Museum or Armémuseum in Stockholm built up the government agency, Statens försvarshistoriska Museer, that is "Swedish Museums of the Defence Forces". Air Force Museum in Linköping owns a fabulous collection of aircrafts and equipment starting from the old days to the present. The collection include aircrafts of both civil as well as military aviation. The museum displays airplanes from every stage of Swedish military aviation. A guided tour of the museum gives a vivid description of Swedish military aviation history.

The most notable exhibition at Air Force Museum,Linköping showcase the objects from the time of World War I and these include an Albatros 120 trainer, and Nieuport and Bréguet combat aircrafts. A Saab-built Junkers Ju 86 twin-engined bomber is seen next to a row of British, American, Italian and Swedish airplanes. The aircrafts reveal the diversity of the Swedish Air Force and technologies used during World War II.

Air Force Museum,Linköping also houses collection of post war aircrafts and equipment. From the post-war years, the significant service aircraft range from the tough fighter of the 1950ies, the Saab J 29 "Flying Barrel", to the most modern 4th generation multi functional fighter JAS 39 Gripen. The museum also owns a Saab 39 Gripen simulator.
