Kinda Canal

Kinda Canal,Linköping is one of the most visited sites in the city of Linkoping in Sweden. It is one of the most visited Tourist Attractions in Linköping. Linkoping is the capital of the Östergötland County and is also the seat of the Linkoping Municipality. The Kinda Canal,Linköping is a canalized section of the Stångån River which takes you right into the city of Linköping.

If you are sailing down the Kinda Canal,Linköping you will come across the lovely Kinda region which is full of magnificent countryside and scenic lakes. This canal and its artificial section will take you through southern Östergötland which is renowned for its natural beauty. The Kinda Canal in Linköping originates in lake Roxen and flows south through central Linköping. It finally ends ninety kilometres south in Lake Åsunden by Hycklinge/Horn in Kinda.

You will find a number of ancient monuments along the Kinda Canal,Linköping as the region was a hunting and fishing area from the Stone Age. You will see burial sites from the Older and Younger Iron Ages (500 BC – 1050 AD). There are also ancient fortifications along with remnants of Stone and Bronze Age settlements. During the mid 1700’s there were plans for establishing a canal between the forest villages in the Kinda area of southern Östergötland and Linköping at lake Roxen. The canal’s construction began in 1799. The Kinda Canal of Linköping was used to transport timber, cereal grains and other farming products.

In the first decades of the 1800’s a lock was made between Horn and Labbenäs at the northern part of St Rängen. But in 1813 the lock collapsed and the canal remained closed. Forty years later the canal was rebuilt with ten locks and was opened in 1870 for regular traffic. The Kinda Canal,Linköping slowly lost its importance with the building of the railroad and is now used as a pleasurable means of transport.
