HSB Turning Torso

HSB Turning Torso, Malmö is one of the finest example of modern architecture. The unique skyscraper has become one of the major Tourist Attractions in Malmö. The building looks like as if it has been twisted several times. The construction of HSB Turning Torso, Malmö was began in 2001 and has ended in August, 2005. Its unique design was the invention of the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The building was opened officially from August 27, 2005.

HSB Turning Torso in Malmö, is located on the Swedish coast of the Öresund strait. The tower with a height of 190 meters and 54 stories over looks the Malmo city and the bay. So far, HSB Turning Torso is the tallest building in Scandinavia, and Europe's second highest building, after the 264-meter-high Triumph-Palace in Moscow. Before Turning Torso, the 84 meter high Kronprinsen was the tallest building in Malmö.

The design of this unique architecture is based on a sculpture by Santiago Calatrava called Twisting Torso. The sculpture is a white marble piece based on the form of a twisting human being. The structure of Turning Torso contains 9 five-story cubes that twist as they rise up. The top-most segment is twisted 90 degree clockwise in respect to the ground floor. Each level of the building consists of a rectangular section surrounding the central core. The two bottom cubes are used as office space. Cubes 3 to 9 of HSB Turning Torso, Malmö house a total of 149 luxury apartments.

The chief reason behind the construction of HSB Turning Torso, Malmö was to reestablish a recognizable skyline for Malmö since the removal of the Kockums Crane in 2002. Today the building has become a symbol for the city of Malmo. This magnificent tower is the winner of 2005 Emporis Skyscraper Award with the largest margin in the awards history. HSB Turning Torso in Malmö won it over the Q1 Tower in Gold Coast City, Australia and Montevideo Tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands.HSB Turning Torso, Malmö also won the 2005 MIPIM award in Cannes, France for Best International Residential Building beating 1 West India Quay in London, UK, and Espirito Santo Plaza in Miami, USA.
