Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrka) in Stockholm is known by many names. While some refer to it as Sankt Nikolai kyrka or Saint Nicolaus Church, others call it Storkyrkan, which means “The Great Church”. Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrka) is one of the oldest churches in Gamla Stan, the old town located in the heart of Stockholm in Sweden. Oscar II was the last Swedish king to be crowned here in the year 1873.

Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrka) was sanctified in the year 1306, after which its construction work continued for another 200 years. The first ever written mention of this church was found in historical records dating back to 1279. Stockholm Cathedral in Stockholm was also mentioned as a Lutheran Protestant church in a written source dated 1527. In the middle ages, this used to be a church of the Nikolai parish that covered the whole island on which the Old Town stands today. Ever since the Diocese of Stockholm was broken out from the Archdiocese of Uppsala and the Diocese of Strängnäs in 1942, this church has been the cathedral of Stockholm

Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrka) is located adjacent to the Royal Palace, forming the western end of Slottsbacken, the major route to reach the Royal Palace. This historic church is flanked by the streets of Storkyrkobrinken, Högvaktsterrassen, and Trångsund on north and west respectively. The Stockholm Stock Exchange Building is located to the south of this church and faces away from it towards the Stortorget square which is dotted with several other notable buildings as well including the Swedish Academy, Nobel Library, and Nobel Museum.

Architecture of Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrka)
This is a single-tower church that was originally modeled in accordance to 13th century Gothic architectural style and then later remodeled in Baroque style in the year 1740 by the architect Johan Eberhard Carlberg. This church is built of brick, covered in plaster and painted in yellow color with intricate detailing in white color.
