Architecture of Town Hall (Stadshuset), Stockholm
The building of Town Hall (Stadshuset), Stockholm was designed by architect Ragnar Östberg and the construction of this building continued for twelve years, starting from 1911 and lasting till1923. The entire structure is made of eight million red bricks and is centered on two large squares, namely an outer yard and an indoor hall. There are two courts in this hall- the open civic court and the interior covered court.
According to the original design, the indoor hall was intended to be blue in color and hence was called the "Blue Hall", or Blå hallen. However, on the completion of this hall, Östberg found the red color of the bricks so beautiful that he changed his mind and decided to keep the bricks as it is. The banquet held after the annual Nobel Prize award ceremony takes place in this hall itself. The organ in the Blue Hall is the largest in Scandinavia with10,270 pipes.
The other hall at Town Hall in Stockholm is the Golden Hall whose walls are covered with approximately 18 million pieces of gold and colored-glass mosaics.
