Västerås is situated at a distance of 110km to the west of the capital and is best known for its collection of well–preserved archaic buildings, both by the creek and around the city's small Cathedral. From the train station you can easily walk through the Vasa Park, to the Museum of Art and then continue to the Turbine House, which is one of Sweden's first power plants, which was constructed in the year 1890 by ASEA. This is the best place to view the Västerås castle (erected in 1200) which was the site of the famous Parliamentary decision of 1527 when King Gustav Wasa abolished Catholicism in Sweden, making Sweden a protestant country. From here you can continue northwards to the Svartån creek and explore the older parts of Västerås. Here you can see Stora Torget and the surrounding streets and the old Cathedral that dates back to the 13th century.
