Weather in Sweden

Weather in Sweden may be determined by the location of the country in terms of its latitudinal position. Though placed in the northern latitude, due to the Gulf Stream, it has a temperate climate. Weather in Sweden varies in different parts of the country. Sweden experiences both mild and warm climate. Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, experiences both mild and warm climates while in the northern mountain ranges, the climate is basically sub-Arctic in nature.

In the north of the Arctic circle, the summer has a unique feature. Here, the sun never sets for a part of the summer and is called the ”Midnight Sun” . But on the contrary, the opposite occurs during the winter time when for a particular period, the night is unending and these nights are usually known as the Polar nights. However, it is observed that there is a great deal of divergence in weather between the northern and southern part of Sweden. The north experiences a long winter which lasts for about seven months while on the other hand the southern part experiences a brief winter spell, which does not last for more than two months.

The annual rainfall usually averages around 61 cm and the maximum rainfall usually occurs in the latter part of the summer season. Sweden experiences considerable amount of snowfall and the northern part of Sweden experiences snow which remains on the ground for about half the year.An important feature that is observed in Sweden is the seasonal change found in the length of the day and night. In the mid of winter, darkness prevails in Sweden and these nights in Scandinavia are generally referred to as the “Polar nights”

During midsummer, the daylights are very much dominant and barely any sort of night darkness is visible. This phenomenon during the months of June and July is referred to as the Midnight Sun.During the months of January and February, the Average high and low temperatures are 31 and 22 degree Celsius while during the summer months like May and June, the Average high and low temperatures are 60 and 41 degree Celsius
