Christmas in Syria

Christmas in Syria is considered as one of the most important events and festivals in Syria. Like most of the countries around the world Christmas in Syria is celebrated with enthusiasm and energy. Although Syria is a Muslim dominated country yet it is a place of great importance in the Christian world. As Christmas is one of the most important events it is included in the list of holidays in Syria. Christmas celebrations in Syria begin early and on December 6 a Mass is organized in the Church.

This event has great importance in Christmas in Syria as this day is dedicated to Saint Nicholas Thaumaturgus. According to popular beliefs this man was just like Saint Nicholas and was kind man who helped people. The culture of Syria gives great importance to family values, traditions and customs. On the eve of Christmas all the members of the family stand surrounding an unlit bonfire. According to rituals the youngest son of the family narrates the story of Christmas to everyone present. It is only after this event that the bonfire is lit.

It is believed that as the fire spreads the burning flames actually indicate the house which is going to be really lucky that year. As the warmth of the fire spreads people join each other while singing psalms and surround the fire. This bonfire is an integral part of Christmas in Syria. As the flames die down all the members make their wishes and jump on the embers. Syrian Christmas is all about these rituals and customs which have been passed on to generations for years. Members of the family celebrate Christmas with each other and pray for the welfare of the family.

On the day of Christmas everybody go to the Church and join the other members of the community for early morning prayers. In the middle of the Church floor a bonfire is made and as the flames go up people sings hymns. When all this is happening a celebrant carries Baby Jesus all through the Church. The first person who gets the touch of Baby Jesus gets the “touch of peace”. This touch is then passed from one person to another until and unless each and everyone in the church get the touch.

Christmas in Syria is all about food, wine and Christmas tree. A traditional Christmas dinner comprises various citrus fruits, chicken items and an extensive dessert platter. People enjoy this day as this day is not only about religious beliefs but also about togetherness and happiness.
