The Saladin's Mausoleum, Damascus was built in honor of Saladin, who was a great leader in the region. Saladin also known as Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub was a Muslim military and political leader in the 12th century. He is a well admired personality in the Muslim community. Saladin was born in 1138 in a Turkish family. He was sent to Damascus to complete his education. He studied Islamic theology while he was there. He took some military training and joined in wars. He became the vizier in 1169.
Saladin was a capable ruler who made the economy of Egypt very strong, trained the military forces really well and stayed far from Nurad-din who was the previous lord of Saladin. When Nurad-din died, Saladin declared himself to be the ruler of Egypt. He founded the Ayyubid dynasty and restored sunnism in the country. He is widely regarded as the Waliullah who is a person close to the Almighty. Saladin conquered Jerusalem and wanted to wield power over the whole of Europe.
Saladin was very much in war against the incursions of the Christians. Even then he became very popular in Europe. He was widely known as the chivalrous knight and there were poems that were written in his honor. He died in 1193. After his death he was buried outside Umayyad Mosque at the present site of the Saladin's Mausoleum, Damascus. A marble sarcophagus was donated to the mausoleum by Wilhelm II. The body of Saladin was however not put in it. The mausoleum contains two sarcophagi. There is the marble one which is empty and the wooden one contains the body of Saladin.
The Saladin's Mausoleum, Damascus was built in 1193. The mausoleum has a red colored dome and is placed in a beautiful garden. You can visit this site any time of the year.
