Damascus is located in the south-western end of Syria on a plateau. The Plateau is 680 meters above sea level, with the Lebanon Mountains on its west and desert to its east. The countries bordering Syria are Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea. Damascus is the capital city of Syria and is famous as the oldest inhabited city of the world.

The official language spoken in Damascus is Arabic, though Kurdish, Armenian, Aanai, Circassians are also spoken or understood. Most of the inhabitants of Damascus are Sunni Muslim, while the rest are either other Muslim or Christians.

Airports in Damascus
The main airport in the city is Damascus International City. The code is DAM. IT is located 25 km southeast of the city and can be reached in 40 minutes. There are two more international airports in Damascus as well.

Transportation in Damascus
These are Aleppo and Latakia, which have connections with Amman and Beirut airports. There are regular bus services, which run every 30 minutes from 6am in the morning till 11pm at night. One can also avail Taxi services as well, which are widely available. It is advisable to go for negotiations of fares if the taxi has no meter. All the Airports have banking, restaurants / snacks and duty free shops facilities. A tourist center exists in every airport.

Sightseeing in Damascus
There are many tourist interests to visit in Damascus. The National Museum, Damascus University, Damascus Oriental Institute of Music, a technological Institute, an industrial school are worth visiting in Damascus. The other places of interests for the visitors include the Great Mosque, which is among the largest and most famous mosques in the whole Muslim World, the Quadrangular Citadel that was built during Roman time of 1219, a 16th century Muslim Monastery, the Azm Palace, a museum as well as center for Islamic Art and Architecture study Center. The legendary biblical street, popularly called the ‘Straight’ still passes through the old city along east-west gate, with different shops dotting along both the sides.
