Transportation in Damascus is quite advances as the city is well connected with good roads. There are many highways connecting the city with other major cities. The Transportation in Damascus include micro buses, taxis and in rush hours, on foot.

Getting in to Damascus

The Damascus International Airport is the main airport in this historic city. It is situated to the east of the city. There are two other smaller airports. These are Aleppo Airport and Latakia Airport. The airports have all the modern facilities including banking, restaurants, duty free shops. A tourism information bureau is also present at the airports.

The best option to reach the city is to book a car via your hotel, provided such services are there with the hotel. Of course, buses are also available to take you to your destination. One can also hire taxis to reach your hotel.

Damascus Transportation also include train services that can be availed to reach the city from the airport. The train stops at two stations while coming from Aleppo, the Homs and Hama. One of these trains goes further to Qamishli via Raqqa, Deir ez zoor and Hassaka. Railway services are also available from Latakia, which stops at Homs and Tartus. But taxis and buses are mostly availed of to reach the city. The main Station is at Qadam, though.

One can reach Damascus by the weekly sleeper trains from Istanbul (36 hours) and also from Tehran (60 hours). Twice weekly train services are also available from Amman.

Getting around Damascus

It is wise to move around the city on foot for sightseeing. This is due to the fact that at rush hours, between 10am till 4pm the public means of transport are often crowded. Hiring a taxi is also not a good proposition as most of the time, traffic jams take place, mainly during summer time. Getting a parking area also becomes difficult. In suburbs, the situation is not as bad though.

Often, the main means of transport in Damascus are the micro buses. These are locally called as services. The fares are very cheap and one can reach any destination easily.
