Tourist Attractions in Latakia involves a visit to the museums and ruins of the city. Apart from this, Tourist Attractions in Latakia also includes a visit to the castles and other important excursions in and around the city.
One of the main attractions in Latakia is, the Latakia Museum. Housed in an old Ottoman building, it is surrounded by a nice set of gardens replete with a variety of sarcophagi and columns. In the front of the museum one can come across four nice Greco-Roman statues.
The rooms of the museum are divided into periods. The ancient rooms contain pottery and tablets from the Egyptian, Phoenician, and Ugarit eras. The classical rooms boast of coins, pottery, and jewelry from the Roman and Greek eras. The Islamic room contains relics from the various eras of Islamic rule and the Crusades. The museum also consists of a modern art room that has a few paintings from local artists.
Close to Latakia there lie the ruins of Ugrit. It is the site where the world’s oldest alphabet was found. As an ancient port it has a great historical significance. A great deal of the Eastern Mediterranean’s trade with Mesopotamia was carried out from this port.
It is one of the few Bronze Age sites in the Middle East.
Also close to Latakia lies the Qala'at Salah Ad-din, Latakia. This is one of the most impressive castles in Syria. Built on a mountain ridge it is securely placed between two sharp ravines. This man made canyon has been cut out by hand to separate the castle from the ridge. The effort which went in to make this canyon leaves one agape with wonder. In the castle there are several towers with stairs inside to climb. The view from the towers is very nice over the castle and surrounding landscapes.
To the traveler in Syria, Latakia is a nice base from where one can make some excursions to the surrounding area. Both Qalat Salah ad-Din and Qalat Marqab can be done as day trips from here. To the north of the city is the Shatt al-Azraq. It is full of fancy resorts and beaches.
Latakia is by far Syria’s least conservative town. It has the best shopping, fancy restaurants, and trendy Internet cafes. Alcohol flows freely at bars and young Latakia dance the night at the various clubs of the city.
