The Civic Centre and Colonnaded Street, Palmyra

The Civic Centre and Colonnaded Street, Palmyra are two excellent sightseeing attractions of Palmyra. Those of you who want to visit The Civic Centre and Colonnaded Street, Palmyra, should go to the street which lies just opposite the Sanctuary of Bel. It is a triumphal arch and forms the entrance to the Civic Center and the main ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra.

This arch was built during the 2nd century AD when Palmyra was regarded as one of the famous cities of Roman Empire. When you enter through the arch, you would come to the Colonnaded Street which is the main street of Palmyra. It runs down through the center of the city. You would still see many of the columns that have been re-erected in their original places. From these columns you would get the idea about the look of the street when there were lots of columns along the whole of the street. Along with these columns, you would also find remnants of various pipes. These, which lie along the side of the street, were used to carry water.

As you proceed down the Colonnaded Street, you would find two more ruins- the Temple of Nebo and the Baths of Diocletin. Nothing remains here other than the walls and the columns. Another important site that you can visit here is the theater. The striking feature of this age-old theater is that the outside walls of the theater have been recently furnished. This is the place where various plays and concerts of the Palmyra Desert Festival are held. Go inside the theater and you would get a fair idea about how the theater originally looked like from the fine decor and the seats.

Another interesting site lies further down the Colonnaded Street in Palmyra. This is a four footed arch that forms the man intersection point between two main streets of ancient Palmyra. The best things about the ruins of Palmyra are that these are unguarded. You would often find locals offering you cold water or cola. Their prices are reasonable.

The Civic Centre is the place where you would find a convention hall and a huge arena for games. The games that you can play at the arena are basketball, boxing and football. The convention hall is the place which hosts varieties of programs.
