Facts about Palmyra

Facts about Palmyra enable one to have a first hand knowledge about the city of Palmyra. Palmyra is one of the ancient cities in Syria. One can visit the sites around here by undertaking camel or horse rides. Before visiting the city one must essentially know certain Facts about Palmyra.

Palmyra is the most important archaeological attraction in Syria. It is one of the best sights in the whole of the Middle East. The city owes its existence and historic significance to the natural water springs that irrigate its oasis. The location of the oasis in the middle of the unforgiving desert made Palmyra an indispensable stop along the desert caravan route

Palmyra was an important and wealthy caravan stop on the Silk Route between Europe and the Orient. The city is also famous for its legendary queen Zenobia. She conquered all of Syria and parts of Egypt and Asia Minor before being captured by the Romans in AD 272. Palmyra’s decline accelerated during the Byzantine period.

Reaching Palmyra by road, through the Syrian Desert presents an altogether beautiful sight. It is something which one cannot easily forget. After crossing a corner one can suddenly see a huge expanse of columns and arches in the middle of a green oasis. This is when you realize that Palmyra has arrived.

Things to see in Palmyra include:

  • Temple of Bel
  • Roman Colonnade
  • Funerary Towers
  • Hypogeum of Three Brothers
  • Arab Castle
The town is not large. The historic site was built at a time when vehicular form of transportation had not developed. So the sites were built close by. Even today walking around is the best possible way to see the sites around.

The main roads running north of the city abound in small restaurants. These places sell the typical range of Syrian fast food. Bakeries can also be found in plenty. The hotels also offer well stocked bars. Lodging off all types is available here. There are no ATM’s available here. Nor is there a full fledged bank. However there is a currency exchange office next to the museum.
