Transportation in Taiwan



Transportation in Taiwan is convenient and comfortable. Taiwan is located off the coast of southeastern China, southwest of Okinawa and north of the Philippines. The island provides easy access to many important places nearby. Today Taiwan boasts of its well-developed transportation networks in the Republic of China.

Getting to Taiwan

Air Access in Taiwan

There are 18 airports in Taiwan. The island is mainly served by the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, located in Taoyuan County. Located 40 kilometers to the southwest of Taipei, the airport is the major hub of China Airlines, the ROC's flag carrier as well as EVA Air.

There are several international flights to and from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and to a lesser extent, the Kaohsiung International Airport. Taichung and Hualien Airports also serve international tourists. The Songshan Domestic Airport is located in Taipei.

The Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport also serves direct buses to Taipei, Taichung and other nearby cities. The U-Bus company operates shuttles to HSR Taoyuan (Jhongli) station for high-speed train connections, and to Jhongli Transit Station, for mainline TRA train and southbound bus connections to Tainan, Hsinchu.

Boat Access in Taiwan

Frequent ferry service is available in the island. There are bi-weekly passenger ferry links between Okinawa Island, Ishigaki and Miyako in Okinawa, Japan and Keelung and Kaohsiung in Taiwan. Star Cruises also serves cruise services from Keelung and Kaohsiung to Hong Kong and various Japanese islands. There are also services to Xiamen in mainland China via Ishigaki. The chief ports in Taiwan are Hualien, Kaohsiung, Keelung, Taichung.

Rail Access in Taiwan

Transportation in Taiwan includes an extensive railroad system that covers a distance of 1496 kilometers. Presently, the TRTS in Taipei is the operational rapid transit system in Taiwan. The Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) started its operations on January 5, 2007. It connects Taipei in the northeast of the island of Taiwan to Kaohsiung City in the southwest. The public transport system in Taiwan is economical and effective.
