Strategically positioned in order to protect Kaohsiung Harbor, Chihou Battery, Kaohsiung is one of the historical Tourist attractions in Kaohsiung. These batteries along with its surrounding walls and gates tell the story of glorious past of Kaohsiung when it was ruled by the Ching (Qing) dynasty. Because of Kaohsiung Port the city is also known as the "Harbor Capital" of Taiwan. Chihou Battery, Kaohsiung, set on Chihou Mountain, has been guarding the harbor since the time of Ching Emperor Kangshi.
Emperor Kangshi from Ching Dynasty wanted to build a port in Kaohsiung as it was situated in a convenient position to serve as a marine base as well as water transportation hub. Which is why the Harbor of Takou was established and since then it has been used as an important commercial port. To defend the harbor from enemy attack Kaohsiung Chihou Battery had been set on the mountain. Two batteries were founded at the northern and southern ends of Kaohsiung Harbor. One of these batteries, Kaohsiung Chihou Battery was larger in size. It was found in better condition and is preserved well.
At the entrance of the site there are nicely carved gates. Chinese design of character '8' is engraved on the gates and walls surrounding Chihou Battery in Kaohsiung. On both sides of the main entrance you will see red bricks which form characters of Shuanghsi. The characters of Shuanghsi reveal 'double happiness' in Chinese.
Chihou Battery, Kaohsiung went into complete oblivion and was uncared for a long period of time before 1945. Its neighboring areas were declared as military control zone after Taiwan's restoration in 1945. Later the batteries and the adjacent areas were restored and renovated. Presently these batteries are open for public visit. After visiting Chihou Battery you can travel on the mountain and enjoy scenic beauty of the place.
