History of Botanical Garden, Taipei:
The 8 hectare garden was established in 1921 as a result of the efforts of the Central Research Institute, operating under the responsibility of the Forest Management. The site was formerly used as a nursery which dated back to 1896AD. During the 1930s, the garden housed a total of 1,120 species of flora which was destroyed during the Second World War. However, the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute worked hard to re-establish the garden. Today, more that 1,500 species of plants make the collection at Botanical Garden of Taipei.

Sections at Botanical Garden, Taipei:
The Taipei Botanical Garden features a large number of sections such as:

  • Yamamoto Yoshimatsu Commemorable Pavilion: Dedicated to the Late Dr. Yamamoto Yoshimatsu, this pavilion features his private collection of plants.
  • Taiwan Bu-Cheng Shih Szyamen: This pavilion features historic details about gardening and lifestyle of the locals.
  • Senses Garden: Housing several special plants, one can smell and touch the leaves of the trees. One can smell the aroma of Lauraceae and Rutaceae. The most important plant specie housed is the Bdelium plant.
  • Pinnetely Compound Plants Garden: This garden features plants having feather-like leaves which arise from both sides of a plant. Few of the plants which inhabit this area are the Sapindaceae, Anacardeaceae, Aceraceae and Rutaceae.
  • Taiwan Aquatic Plants garden: As the name suggests, this part of the Botanical Gardens in Taipei features plants like Philydraceae, Pistia Stratiotes and Ludwigia Octovalvis.
  • Chinese Zodiac Plants Garden: Dedicated to the Chinese astrology, the garden features plants dedicated to the Twelve Branches of Astrology.
  • Arena Glasshouse: This features carnivorous plants mainly Pitcher Plants.
  • Lotus Pond: Probably the most popular site within the Botanical Garden, it harbors a wide variety of water-lilies. Marginal plants, such as land Salicaceae and Juglandaceae are also planted in the surrounding areas of the Pond. A few animals such as Mouthbreeder, Anglerfish and Brazil Tortoise are also released here for ecological balance.
