Tanzania is a country situated in East Africa. Tanzania is bordered by Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi in the west; Uganda and Kenya in the north; Indian Ocean towards the east; Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi in the south. Zanzibar island belonging to the Tanzania territory lies off the coast of Tanzania. The mainland part of Tanzania was formerly regarded as Tanganyika. However, in 1964 Tanganyika and Zanzibar island united to form Tanzania.
History of Tanzania: Early Settlers of Tanzania
About ten thousand years ago, Tanzania was occupied by hunter-gathering communities. They were the early settlers of Tanzania. This community of hunting people spoke Khoisan. Later Cushitic-speaking people came from the north of the continent of Africa and settled in Tanzania with Khoisan speaking people. These Cushitic people introduced in Tanzania the methods of cattle farming and agriculture. Following that, the Bantu speaking people migrated to Tanzania from western part of Africa. After them the Nilotic pastoral people came to Tanzania and continued to immigrate to Tanzania till the 18th century.
History of Tanzania: Colonization of Tanzania
Tanzania was occupied by Germany from 1880 to 1919. From 1919 to 1961 Tanzania went under the rule of the British. However in 1961 Tanganyika became independent. During 1880-1919 Dutch, Belgian, British and French ships visited the port of Zanzibar . In fact Africa was divided into colonies- Congo River region was a colony under the Belgians; East Africa was shared between the Germans and the British. Zanibar Island was called German East Africa. In course of time the local people rose into rebellion against the Germans for their atrocities. By December 1917, the Germans were to made to evacuate Tanganyika and the Zanibar island. After World War I Tanganyika was occupied by the British and became a British mandate .
Tanzania History: Independence of Tanzania
Tanganyika gained its freedom fro British rule in 1961. In 1963 Zanzibar became independent. In 1964 Republic of Tanzania was formed by the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar Island.
