Festivals in Togo

Festivals in Togo reflect the religious belief of the Togolese. Festivals in Togo mainly include the celebrations of the beginning and end of harvest season in the country.

Christianity and Islam are the 2 popular religions in Togo. Despite its presence the people of the country still have immense belief in traditionalism and superstition most of which is related to ancestral customs and beliefs.

The people of Togo believe in any God and in the existence of the Supreme Being. They worship a thousand of intermediate divinities that link human beings to God. Those intermediate divinities can have their followers and their covens. It is compulsory for every house, to have a family altar meant for the worship of deities. Regular libations are poured or made for the protection of the members of that family.

The fetish priest and the diviners still play an important role in the lives of the people. They even double up as semi medical doctors or semi magicians. It is widely believed that the powers have been bestowed upon them by the Gods. With their supernatural powers they can protect people against other evil spirits. Their spell can not only stave off diseases but even enhance the powers of the owners. The traditional medicines, made of herbs or purely mystical are given the respect due to modern medicine.
