Geography of Togo




Geography of Togo is diverse and is characterized by varieties of geographical features. Togo land area is about 54, 385 square kilometers and the country has mountains, plateaus and coastal areas. The climate of the country is depended on the Geography of Togo.

Togo is one of the Sub-Saharan nations lying in the western part of African continent. The country falls at a longitude of 1°10' east and latitude of 8° north. This tiny country shares its boundary with 3 other countries. Benin is in the eastern part, which shares around 6, 444 kilometers of boundary.

Burkina Faso and Ghana is in the northern part. In the southern direction, the country has 56 kilometers of coastline. The country is 579 kilometers northwards from the Gulf of Guinea. The country covers an area of 56, 785 square kilometers. Togo land area is about 54, 385 square kilometers and the rest about 2, 400 square kilometers is water part. The broadest point of Togo land is just 160 kilometers.

Diverse geographic features exist in this narrow country. The country has six geographic regions. In the northwest and southwest, the range of hills is called Chaine du Togo. The region contains 2 savanna plains. In the southern part of the country, there are long stretches of low-lying fine sand beaches. The region around the coast is tapered and low depth lagoons and tidal flats. Many lakes also found in the area, and the largest lake is the Lake Togo.

In the northern part of the country, the Ouatchi Plateau covers a large area. The plate extends up to 30 kilometers and is at an altitude of 90 meters. The region is famous for the reddish leached soil, which has large content of iron. Another name for this plateau is the Terre de barre.

The Northeast part of the plateau has the tableland. The highest point in this tableland is about 500 meters measuring from the sea level. The area has 2 major rivers, the Mono River and the Ogou River.

The western and the southwestern part of this region have the ranges of Togo Mountains. The tallest mountain peak in the country is Mount Agou , which is 986 meters above the sea level. The farthest areas in the northwestern part of the country have the region, which is rocky, and chief rocks found are the granite and the gneiss. Dapaong or Dapango cliffs are also found here.
