History of Togo




History of Togo is divided into 5 distinctive phases. The important phases are 11 the century to 16 the century Togo, German colony: AD 1884-1914, French and British rule in Togo: AD 1916-1960 and the Independence of Togoland: from AD 1960. History of Togo is very interesting and throws light on the development of the region.

11th century to 16th century Togo:

Togo saw the arrival of various tribal community in the region from al the neighboring countries of the African continent. The tribes were the Ewe which came from countries of Nigeria and Benin and the Guin and the Mina tribes from kingdom of Ghana. These tribes landed and settled in the coastal parts of the country. The country also witnessed the salve trade of African Continent. The country of Togo and its surrounding areas were called ‘the salve coast’’.

German colony: AD 1884-1914:

Togo was under the German rule around 50 years. The first German connection with Togo was the coming of missionaries in the year 1847. These missionaries came to work for the development of the largest tribal community of the country, the Ewe. Traders soon arrived in Togo and soon the country was under the German empire. The country was also marked as the one of the 3 places in the western coast of the African country which was under the German rule. The Germans built a new town at Lome.

French and British rule in Togo: AD 1916-1960:

The German rule ended in Roho during the First World War. France and England fought together against Germany and captured the German colonies. Togoland was also captured and was administered by the French and the British.

Independence of Togo land: from AD 1960

With many twists and turns and passing of many mandates, the French made the country independent in the year 1956. Togo became an autonomous body, still under the French Union. The f1st premier was Nicholas Grunitzky. He started the Togolese Progress Party and fought for the country’s first territorial assembly elections. Sylvanus Olympio, another eminent leader of the Togolese National Unity Party won the elections, in the year 1961. His rule ended with 2 years of tenure when he did not agreed with the Togolese non-commissioned officers asking service in the Togolese army. These rejections also led to the loss of his life in 1963. The country saw a political turmoil when there was a military coup and seize of power. Democracy shouts throughout the country forced the dictatorship of Eyadema to end and started a fresh election.
