Festivals in Sukhothai

Festivals in Sukhothai are greatly varied and colorful. The Loi Krathong and Candle Festival is one of the most important festivals in Sukhothai. It is held annually on the full moon
night of the 12th lunar month at the Sukhothai Historical Park. Activities during the festival include krathong floating, a fireworks display, and local games and performances amid the glamorous atmosphere of the Sukhothai Historical Park. There will be a sound and light show portraying the ancient and historical capitol of Sukhothai and processions of decorated colorful lanterns, Kratong and Miss Nopphamat contest and a splendid firework in ancient Thai style.

There are various accounts about the origins of the Loi Krathong tradition in Thailand. This is one of the important festivals in Sukhothai .However given the river-based culture that forms the foundation of the traditional Thai way of life in Thailand, it is widely believed that the origin of the Loi Krathong festival was the ritual of offerings made to Mae Khongkha, the Mother of Waters in an act of appeasement. Thai people believe that by setting a krathong adrift the krathong, one symbolically casts away grief, misery and ill-fortunes. Coins are also placed in the krathong in the form of offerings. For the romantic at heart and young couples, Loi Krathong in Sukhothai and elsewhere in Thailand is the time to make yearly wishes for happiness and success in love.

Another significant festival among the festivals in Sukhothai is Si Satchanalai Ordination Celebration. Called by Thais as Buat Chang Hat Siao, this local event is held annually during 7-8 April at Ban Hat Siao, Amphoe Si Satchanalai. It features a spectacular procession of ordination candidates in colorful costumes on the backs of some 20-30 decorated elephants. The ceremony has been arranged by Thai Phuan, the citizens of Ban Hat Siao for more than 150 years.

Songkran Festival is also noted as a major festival among the festivals in Sukhothai. This is an annual celebration of the Thai New Year, 13 April. The festival was mentioned in the famous stone inscription believed to be inscribed during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great of the Sukhothai Kingdom.
