History: In the late 12th century Amsterdam was a small fishing village. A local story says that the city is named after the river Amstel when two Frisian fishermen founded this land when they landed on the shores of this river with their boat. Amsterdam got its freedom from Holland on 27th October, 1275.
During the 16th century Dutch rebelled against Philip II of Spain which resulted into the Eighty Years War.
The golden age of Amsterdam began in the 17th century. During this time it became the wealthiest cities of the world. Since then Amsterdam is growing at a fast pace.

Economy: Amsterdam besides being the capital city is also the financial capital of Netherlands. Dutch international banks like ABN Amro, Philips ING Group, Heineken, Delta Lloyd Group and Ahold, have headquarters in Amsterdam. Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange on earth and is also a part of Euronext.
Administration and Government: Amsterdam is headed by a mayor, his representatives and the municipal council. To improve the local governance, Amsterdam has 15 stadsdelen responsible for city government activities.
Educational Institutions: There are two universities of Amsterdam: University of Amsterdam and Free University. There are several other educational institutions like and art school, Hogeschool van Amsterdam, De Rietveldacademie, Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. International Institute of Social History is located in Amsterdam. It is one of the world’s largest social history research institutions.
