Geography: Located in South Central Alaska, Anchorage is flanked by Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet on west north and south. The Chigach Mountain on the east blocks the warm air flowing from the Gulf of México. The Alaska Range lies on the north. It obstructs the cold air to reach Anchorage keeping the city temperature warmer than the other parts of Alaska.
History: The history of Anchorage goes back to more than 6000 years. It was then Tanaina tribe’s summer fishing camp. Before 1650, when Taniana took over this place, Anchorage was dominated by the Pacific Eskimos. By 18th century trade began between Native Americans, Eskimos, and Aleuts. The Cook Inlet of Anchorage was named after Captain James Cook who is said to be the first European to have explored Anchorage in 1778. 1882 witnessed a huge population explosion in Anchorage when gold was discovered along Turnagain Arm.

Transport System: Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is the only airport in Alaska. Due to this reason Anchorage is a very important tourist’s destination for most. The airport serves as a starting and ending point for most of the visitors. The Alaska Railroad runs everyday to Seward, Talkeetna, Denali Park and Fairbanks.
Educational Institutions: Although Alaska is an economically poor country, you will find most of the people here are graduates. Anchorage hosts some world class educational institutions. There are 14 colleges and universities in Anchorage.
Cultural Life: Anchorage holds a rich heritage of art and culture. There are more than 75 organizations in the city conducting classical music and native dance shows. The Anchorage concert Association sponsors about 22 music, dance and theatre shows every year.
