Geography: The city of Atlanta is located at a height of 320 m above the sea level on the foothills of Southern Appalachians. Located near the Gulf of México and flanked by the Atlantic Ocean, the city of Atlanta has a mild climate throughout the year. Atlanta draws most of its water from the Chattahoochee River. Although rainfall here is heaviest in the March with little snowfall, tornado is observed very often in Atlanta.

History: Atlanta was occupied by the white Americans in 1812 during the war. Prior to this Atlanta was a virgin land near Chattahoochee River which was meagerly occupied by Creek and Cherokee Native Americans. Fort Gilmer was built here beside a Peach tree which started getting inhabited by the farmers from Georgia, Virginia, and Carolinas. By 1850 Atlanta went through a huge industrialization and also became a dwelling of more than 10,000 people.
The battle of Atlanta in 1864 was followed by catastrophic changes. The city was destroyed and the civilians were relinquished. Atlanta became the capital of Georgia in 1877.

Economy: The economy of Atlanta is not dominated by any particular industry. There are several companies like The Coca-Cola Company, Home Depot, BellSouth, and United Parcel Service having headquarters in Atlanta. After New York and Houston, Atlanta ranks third in fortune 500 companies headquartered in the metropolitan area. The world wide headquarters of COKE and CNN is in Atlanta.

Administration and Government: Atlanta is governed by a city council of 16 members and a mayor headed by a president of the council. The administration of the city is looked after by the mayor who is also a chief executive officer.


Society & Cultural Life: Atlanta is a very vibrant and a colorful city. The city also gives a infinite opportunity to take part in various adventure sports.

  • Airways: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the main airport of Atlanta. It serves more than 85 million passengers every year. It is located at a distance of 10 miles from the downtown.
  • Roadways: Roads are very well connected. Taxis, private cars and buses ply at regular intervals from every corners of the city.
  • Railways: The north south line of the railways connects the airport with the main city. The train runs from Sandy Springs and Dunwoody in Fulton County.

Educational Institutions: Atlanta has more than 43 colleges offering more than 300 programs for undergraduate and graduate degrees. Some of the most prestigious colleges of US are located in Atlanta which offers courses in the field of medicine, law, and theology. Emory University, with 11,300 students researching on business and medical programs is the one of the city’s principle schools. The other eminent colleges include Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta University Center, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Spelman College and Technical College.
