Geography: The island of Barbados is located to the east of the Caribbean islands, in the Atlantic Ocean. It has a relatively flat land and the highest point is mount Hillaby at an altitude of 336 m. due to its far eastern location in the Atlantic Ocean’s hurricane belt, Barbados is often spared from the tropical storms and hurricanes during the rainy season.
History: Barbados was the native land of American nomads. In 1536, Portuguese explorer Pedro a Campos halted at Barbados while on his way to Brazil. It was he who later named this island as Barbados. By 1640 sugarcane plantation began here.
Economy: During the early days the economy of Barbados was dependent upon sugarcane cultivation and related industries. But today the economy is more dependent upon tourism and manufacturing sectors. Government’s effort to reduce unemployment has been successful to a good extent. Barbados is also schedule to host the 2007 World Cup Cricket Tournament.

Transport System: The Barbados' Grantley Adams International Airport is located at a distance of 16 km on the southern coast of the island. The cruise ships arrive at the Bridgetown's harbor. More than 500,000 passengers reach Barbados by sea. Bus, Taxis, and Rented cars are available for site seeing.
Society & Cultural Life: Barbados has a very strong influence of English culture. So much so, their national game is cricket just like the English men. Crop Over Festival is the largest carnival of Barbados, which is internationally famous. The celebration of this festival includes musical competitions, costumed parade etc.
Administration and Government: The democratic nation of Barbados is headed by a Prime Minister and his Cabinet Ministers. The Governor General is a member of the House of Assembly and he is responsible for the appointment of The Prime Minister. Barbados has been included in the Commonwealth as an independent state since November 30, 1966.
Educational Institutions: The cost of education at all the levels is paid by the Barbadian government. The literacy rate is one of the highest in the world estimated at 98%. The best colleges of Barbados are: Erdiston Teachers' College, Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, Barbados Community College. The University of West Indies have three campuses, one of which lie in Barbados.
