Geography: Facing the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona is located on the Iberian Peninsula’s northeast coast. Collserola mountain range falls at the backdrop of the city. Tibidabo with a height of 512m is the highest point of this mountain range. Barcelona is surrounded by Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Sant Adriŕ de Besňs in the north, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues de Llobregat in the south, Mediterranean in the east and Mediterranean in the west.
History: The history of Barcelona gloriously dates back to more than 2,500 years. The first settlers of this land were Phoenicians and Carthaginians. In 1st century BC Carthaginians were replaced by the Romans. Romans were defeated and the Roman Empire was conquered by the Visigothsin 415 AD. They renamed the city of Barcino as Barcinona. The 11th and 12th century is considered to be the golden age of Barcelona.
Economy: Manufacturing has played a major role in Barcelona’s economy since the early ages of industrialization in Europe. Textile is one of the major industries here. Tourism industry and other service industry is also at a boom in the recent years.

Transport System: Barcelona’s main airport is the El Prat International Airport, which is about 3 km from the city. It is the 2nd largest airport in Spain. The other two domestic airports include Sabadell Airport, and Girona-Costa Brava Airport. Barcelona can also be reached via sea. The port of Barcelona is 2000 years old. Sants Estació is the main railway station of the city. Public transport in Barcelona includes taxis, buses, and metro.
Society & Cultural Life: Barcelona with a 2000 year old history has a very rich culture. Catalan and Spanish are widely spoken in Barcelona making it a bilingual city.
Administration and Government: The city government of Barcelona is headed by a Mayor at the top followed by five Lieutenant Mayors and 15 City Councilors. The city is divided into ten administrative districts. These districts have their own councils headed by their city councilor. The official names of these cities are in the Catalan language.
Educational Institutions: Barcelona has well developed educational institutions. University of Barcelona offer world class research facilities. The other universities include Technical University of Catalonia, Pompeu Fabra University and, the Ramon Llull University. There are several city schools in Barcelona as well.
